Kaktusart

Melocactus wachsen kugelförmig und werden bis zu einem Meter groß. Die Triebe bestehen aus 8 bis 27 Rippen. Auf ihnen sitzen die Areolen, aus denen 3 bis 21 Dornen wachsen. Nach dem Wachstum der Jugendphase bildet sich ein Cephalium, das aus wolligen Haaren und Borsten besteht. Aus dem Cephalium wachsen kleine Blüten, die rot bis rosafarbig sind.

Diese Arten wachsen im Westen Mexikos bis durch Mittelamerika und Ekuador und im Süden von Peru.
